Mental Health For Youth Initiative

Clean Camp Hero

Transforming creativity into a safe, powerful movement where young people express, connect, and heal through art.

The link between a person’s environment and their mental health is well established. Yet in Abuja’s IDP camps, where waste, poor sanitation, and neglect compound existing trauma, that connection continues to go unaddressed.

Clean Camp Hero is a youth-led environmental initiative that trains displaced young people as agents of change in their own communities. It equips them with the skills, tools, and purpose to clean their environment, build sustainable livelihoods, and restore a sense of dignity and wellbeing for themselves and other camp residents.

One Clean Space at a Time

A chance to restore dignity, build hope, and transform everyday environments into spaces that support healing. By equipping young people within IDP camps to lead, learn, and teach, it turns responsibility into purpose and simple actions into lasting impact. Clean spaces begin to ease the mind, and with every step taken, communities move closer to safety, stability, and wellbeing.

This is your opportunity to be part of something that truly matters. To help create cleaner, healthier spaces where people can breathe easier, live better, and begin to heal. Step forward, empower young leaders, and help turn environment into a foundation for resilience and renewal.

Clean Camp Heroes empowers young people within IDP camps to lead environmental change through training, peer outreach, and psychosocial support—improving living conditions while building a scalable model for wellbeing and sustainability.

How it works -
Step by Step

Step 1

We recruit from within

100 young people, 50 male and 50 female, are selected from five IDP camps in Abuja and equipped as Clean Camp Heroes, trained not just to clean but to lead.

Step 2

We build skills that last

Heroes receive hands-on training in waste management, circular economy principles, and waste-to-wealth practices, creating pathways to income, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic agency.

Step 3

We train the trainers

The Heroes do not keep what they learn to themselves. Armed with knowledge and practical tools, they carry out sensitisations across their camps, passing on new skills, behaviours, and environmental practices to fellow residents. One trained Hero becomes a catalyst for change across an entire community.

Step 4

We improve the environment

Through clean-up operations, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing community engagement, living conditions improve for over 5,000 camp residents, directly reducing the environmental stressors that silently damage mental health every day.

Step 5

We connect environment to wellbeing

Psychosocial support activities, group sessions, and resilience workshops are woven into the programme, because a clean environment is the beginning, not the end, of healing.

Step 6

We are built to scale

The model is designed to grow, reaching 200 heroes annually from 2027 and expanding to more camps and communities across Nigeria.
